Verified English Secondary Tutoring Service Reviews From Our Students

Laura - Fikir- English - Secondary
Sunday May 2025
The English tutor session arranged for my 11-year-old son this morning was highly disappointing and felt like a waste of time and money. We had a detailed phone conversation beforehand, where I outlined his struggles with grammatical errors, cohesion, and structuring essays, even providing examples. However, the lesson lacked focus and structure, which undermined its purpose. The tutor spent much of the hour rambling about her impressive academic background, particularly her prize-winning university thesis, her 11 years studying Latin, and her work with ancient Greek. While these achievements are notable, they were irrelevant to an 11-year-old preparing for analytical and creative writing, and they consumed valuable lesson time. She also distracted the session with personal anecdotes, such as camera issues and items falling, seemingly trying to build a friendship rather than teach. This disorganization suggested a lack of experience in delivering a targeted lesson, despite her evident knowledge. Despite our prior discussion, she praised my son’s work excessively, claiming it needed no help, which contradicts the reason for the session. More concerning, when reminded of his needs or when he mentioned his struggles, she advised against writing an introduction, even though the exam question clearly stated “in the form of an essay.” As a tutor, she should recognize that an introduction is essential for essay structure at this level. This misjudgment, combined with her off-topic focus on her accomplishments, made her seem unprepared and unprofessional
