I'm a British PhD-level scholar educated primarily in Bioscience (Biochemistry, Microbiology, Neuro-Endocrinology, and Genomics). Outside of teaching GCSE science I have several years’ experience working in schools in London, Seoul, and Shenzhen as a teacher and technician teaching all age groups EFL and Science. This has included working as a science teacher in a Chinese international school and as an EFL teacher in Korea where I taught English to students ranging from primary and university students to adult businessmen and a retired 80 year old nun. In-between I've worked as a science technician in high schools and I spent four years working towards a MSc-PhD (neuroendocrinology and evolutionary genomics) in Korea.
I'm a new father and co-owner of a house being renovated both of which take up alot of my time outside of work. When I do get free time I enjoy gardening, playing board games, and (hopfully once again) multi-day hiking and cycling trips.
I own a small tuition centre where I teach KS3+4 science to in-person students in groups of 3 to 5, and have been doing this for the past four years. I also tutor part-time in a local school where I specialise in teaching high-ability students with SEN.
What I teach
I teach biology, chemistry, physics, and natural geography to the standard of the UK science curriculum for both KS3 and KS4 (GCSE - both domestic and international, triple and double, and the majority of the middle years IB too). The content is the same regardless of the exam board.
How I teach
I've integrated the UK national curriculum for KS3+4 science into a single, cohesive syllabus for teaching a wholistic science course aimed at higher triple. So, for example, I teach knowledge of molecular structures and states of matter together in a cohesive lesson regardless of whether component information is technically part of the physics or chemistry curriculum.
The syllabus is organised into 175 lessons divided into ‘modules’ of related content. These lessons are taught via powerpoint and make strong use of concise and consistent images, bullet point explanations, and verbal narration. I make these powerpoints available to students after each lesson.
I test students' understanding, verbally, throughout each lesson and I review previous lesson's learned content at the start of each subsequent lesson. I put particular focus on content that will come up in exams using the types of questions that are used in exams, and emphasising the key words expected in exams.
I can teach the whole syllabus, only one subject's material from the syllabus, or specific topics within a subject, at triple or double (higher) level.
GCSE, IGCSE, and general secondary science including the MYP of the IB.
Genetics, genomics, neuro-endocrinology, and cell biology (but without the prepared, structural teaching resources I have for secondary science).
The lesson was on organics continued, where we studied individual organic structures in greater detail.
A great review over the last lesson or so, it really helped compact my knowledge and fill in the gaps. We finally worked on Hydrocarbons in the end.
