It is my sincere conviction that with dedicated support, I can help anyone improve their skills in mathematics and enjoy this deeply satisfying subject.
In school, mathematics was the only subject I deeply understood and loved intrinsically, despite truly awful teachers at times! Fueled by my passion for the subject and the desire for extra pocket money, I started tutoring at the age of 14, and even helped some of my best friends at the time pass their high school exams. I thoroughly loved making maths as natural and fun for others as it was for me. This is still true to this day.
Throughout my Maths and Further Maths A-levels and my 4-year Integrated Master's degree at the University of Manchester, I continued tutoring and my passion for the subject and its communication only grew deeper. I was especially fond of Pure Maths in university, although more recently, I've grown my skills and appreciation in Applied Maths, Probability and Statistics, becoming a more balanced mathematician!
In 2020, I graduated from my Master's as one of the top-scoring students in my year. Since then, I've had a wonderfully diverse career path. I have been a full-time online maths tutor, dabbled in a PhD programme in Mathematics at UCL (which turned out not to be for me at that time) and worked full-time as a financial modelling analyst. Throughout my PhD and analyst life, I have always found time for tutoring, sometimes taking on 10 to 15 hours weekly during busy periods. I've now come back to tutoring full-time as I realised this is my true calling.
As for my hobbies, I love to cook, thanks to my French mother teaching me as a teenager. I'm also obsessed with cycling and bikepacking. I love to go on multi-day or even multi-week bikepacking trips.
EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
2500+ total hours of maths tutoring experience over 2 years tutoring full-time and 8 years tutoring part-time.
Online 1-1 tutoring experience predominantly, in which I became proficient using video-conferencing, digital pen and digital classroom technologies to maximum efficiency.
Students range widely in achievement levels and socio-cultural backgrounds, from disadvantaged GCSE re-takers to Oxford undergraduates, adult learners, and everything in between.
Includes 800+ hours and 40+ students with The Profs/Spires alone.
Summary by level:
* Secondary, GCSE ~ 600 hours
* A-level, IB~ 900 hours
* University ~ 1000 hours
TEACHING STYLE
Ultimately, my approach with each student will be highly personalised and collaborative, tailored to their needs and preferences. That is the beauty of tutoring. However, here is what students and I find typically effective:
Content - The essential for the exam. 90% core exercises and exam-style problems, drawing on theory only for its applications. Even in a proof-based university module, special attention is paid to the ideas and problem-solving methods key to the course and most relevant to the exam.
Communication style - I create a friendly and safe environment for students to express their concerns and ideas. In addition to the usual formalism intuitive interpretations of concepts are offered through visualisation and analogy. I aim to be as revealing and as possible about the clues, key insights and problem-solving strategies I use to slowly take down problems that at first glance appear daunting.
Reinforcement and assessment - I will regularly set relevant and appropriately challenging homework and ask to submit it for discussion at the beginning of the next lesson. I repeatedly stress the importance of independent, focused practice and repetition. Something is not learned until it is mastered, with no outside aid needed, as required for the exam. This is crucial.
Generally, anything mathematical up to Masters level is welcome. But here is a NON-EXHAUSTIVE list on common topics, tests and institutions with which I have experience.

Amazing!
Mel's free trial class was a good way to explore his services, especially for learners seeking engaging, practical lessons. Highly recommended!
Great ! Eager to help and explains things well.
Mel is a truly outstanding math tutor with an exceptional ability to share his insight and knowledge, the evidence is in the improvement in A-level grade achieved !
Fantastic tutor, helped me tremendously with a mathematical economics module in a short time before the exam. Extraordinarily knowledgeable and I would strongly recommend Mel to anyone else who needs a tutor, especially so if you attend a top Russell Group university as my course is quite intense!
Mel is a very patient friendly tutor. We had difficulty to find a statistics tutor, Mel offered help to my daughter, which really boosted her confidence. I’m glad we’ve found Mel at my daughter’s final review stage before her advanced higher statistics exam.
Flexible and helpful. The lessons were tailored to understanding the maths in a way that helps achieve the goal i had efficiently yet thoroughly.
Mel is a fantastic tutor, super patient and goes the extra mile. Friendly and makes maths fun. Thanks!
Professional, friendly, approachable and knowledgeable. My son not only enjoys but also benefits from his tuition session with Mel
another excellent lesson. explains things really well and good advice.
I am really grateful for the support I received from Mel. I was struggling in group theory which was really abstract for me, and he helped me make it more concrete. We went through all kind of examples to apply the theory to real life problems. Mel was really passionate and friendly and wanted me to understand. He always knew what i needed to focus on and guided me through all the steps. Thanks to his help, I achieved 83% in my exam and am going on to study a Masters degree in Applied Mathematics at Columbia University. I would highly recommend his help.

Hi Mel,
I'd like to extend my thanks for all your help during my A-levels! I'm pleased to tell you that I achieved an A in both my maths and AS-level further maths exams, which helped me secure my firm university choice! I'm now at the University of Leeds studying Mechatronics and Robotics engineering, and I'm very grateful for your help in my journey to getting here.
Many thanks,
Fareedha
