I am a passionate History tutor with professional experience in an academic environment. Having lectured at a conference attended by scholars from across Europe, I worked for Balliol College (Oxford) organising talks by world-leading academics. As a self-employed tutor, my strength lies in tailoring each session to the individual student’s needs. Approaching problems creatively, I aim to create an engaging environment in which students can find the best possible solutions while developing their critical thinking skills. I am friendly and encouraging, and believe that promoting a positive student experience is critical to academic success. Moreover, with a highly-analytical background in historical research, my skillset is perfectly suited to formulating well-constructed written arguments.
I have taught History and English to students in both the UK and overseas. Most recently, I worked as a teacher at Lanzhou Oriental International Secondary School in Gansu (China), teaching both primary- and secondary-school students everything from the history of the Roman Empire to Shakespeare’s sonnets.
I also have considerable experience working for both The Profs and as a self-employed tutor, helping GCSE and A-Level students achieve top grades in both History and English across most exam boards (AQA, OCR, Edexcel, etc.). For example, I have helped A-Level students ace their History coursework and achieve top grades! In addition, I have supported successful Oxbridge candidates through their application, providing advice on admissions tests and helping them prepare for their interviews.
While I've studied most areas of History, my main area of expertise is medieval history, having researched and lectured on the topic at academic conferences. Due to the highly-interdisciplinary nature of my studies, I have extensive experience examining the past through several different lenses, including analysing manuscripts written in Latin and collecting data from archaeological excavations of Anglo-Saxon burials. As a result, my expertise is well-suited to topics ranging anywhere from Alfred the Great to The Tudors and beyond.
Moreover, I have studied a wide-range of other topics, ranging from Ancient Rome and Reformation Europe to Gladstonian Liberalism and the Civil Rights Movement, and have successfully tutored students in these subjects. Having written two 12,000-word dissertations, in addition to experiencing first-hand the Oxbridge tutorial essay system, my expertise also encompasses essay-writing skills. This includes helping students to structure their exam essays, sharpen arguments, and link different lines of argument to achieve concise, well-rounded responses.
Alongside History, I also specialise in teaching GCSE students in both English Literature and English Language, and have worked extensively with students on a variety of texts across several exam-boards, including the Merchant of Venice (AQA) and poetry anthologies (Edexcel).
