I am a practising artist and educator with 20 years of experience in teaching, and really enjoy working with students from all backgrounds and communities to explore and develop their creativity and helping them to identify their Art or Design pathway. Prior to my career in education, I have independent practice as an artist/designer within a range of creative industries. I completed a Masters Degree at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (2:1) (Erasmus Exchange Scholar Malmo Sweden), a postgraduate certificate in Stage Design from the famous Motley Course, a degree in Fine Art (1:1), Harrow College of Art (now University of Westminster). I also have a postgrad certificate of Education (PGCE) from the University of the West of England (QTLS).
My studio painting practice explores place and memory through painted texture, using drawing, acrylic and oil paint. I have also worked in many printmaking processes, and 3D making. See @jamesodwyer_ instagram profile to view my personal non-figuritive paintings
The Foundation Art & Design course I established and led for the last 8 years in Bristol had consistent success in progressing applying students to the University degrees of their choice, including mature students with 1st degrees in others areas to masters programmes. I have worked with students to secure places on a wide range of prestigious UK art schools, including UAL programmes in Fine art (Central/St Martins) and in 3D Design (Camberwell), Textile Design at Manchester School of Art, Illustration at Brighton, and Graphic Design at the University of Kingston and many, many more. To view the work of the students I have worked with in the last 8 years, search Instagram for @bristolfoundation.
Whether you are applying to university, or simply want to improve your art and design portfolio/skills as an 'A' level or degree level student or for your own personal/professional development, I can provide a one-off or programme of online, or in-person tutoring that is right for you.
Art School Preparation:
My experience of establishing and running a Foundation Art & Design (FAD) programme, and being a UCAS tutor, for the last 8 years, provide me with a unique overview of what it takes to apply successfully to the right University Degree course for you. Using this experience I will work with you to tailor a structured programme of learning that meets your personal requirements. This could be a programme of Art & Design projects to build a portfolio (I have written a wide range of stimulating and engaging cross-disciplinary project briefs), straight forward portfolio editing and preparation, UCAS mentoring and personal statement writing, or all of this!
I can work with you to develop both your key practical 'craft skills' in drawing, painting and 3D making, and also the important conceptual thinking skills that bring meaning and relevance to your work in any discipline, and make your portfolio of work stand out from the rest.
With an extensive and up to date knowledge of contemporary and historical themes and trends in Art I can teach you about the context that your work exists in, in a way that is relevant and meaningful to the world we live in.
My approach to teaching is always inclusive and student-centred, but I won’t shy away from giving you constructive criticism - ie if you are applying to an Illustration degree, and your portfolio consists only of Manga inspired work - then you may need to diversify your sources!
General instruction:
Through practical workshops and presentations, I will work with you to develop your skills in observational & Life drawing; Painting; Printmaking; 3D working;Visual Culture/ Art history, and more! I am a drawing/life drawing specialist, and I believe that drawing underpins many creative processes. I encourage students to explore formal life drawing and location drawing ('urban sketching'), alongside of more experimental approaches to drawing, which are challenging and fun.
Gallery Visits:
I regularly take Art students on study visits to studios, galleries and museums in London and other cities in the UK, and have taken groups on residential study trips abroad to Berlin, Florence, and Barcelona, and can also offer guided visits to support your personal curriculum needs and interests.
James is a passionate tutor who is very supportive and always ready to listen to their students in need. Which is a great quality as art is such a subjective and vast field and students need guidance along the way.
Matilde Foundation Art & Design student
My name is Rama Azkoul, I graduated with first class Degree from the Fine Art Drawing & Print course at the University of the West of England (UWE)in 2020. My journey began when I began studying the foundation Art & Design course at the City of Bristol College. I had come from a completely different background as I had been studying Law back home in Syria, however, I was so lucky to have James O’Dwyer as my professional Art tutor. I had the privilege of learning from him, and I highly recommend him for his exceptional teaching skills. James has a unique ability to inspire and engage students, creating a positive and supportive learning environment. He is a very understanding teacher. I am deeply grateful for him, I loved his teaching style! I always looked forward to his sessions because of the way he make learning fun! He was fantastic. He's the first best tutor I've ever had in the UK since I started studying here, and he made the subject easier to understand. I just wanted to say in my recommendation Thank you very much, James for your wonderful teaching! I have been challenged to work hard towards achieving my goals in life. You are one of the few teachers that inspire students like me to always strive to be better at everything I do. I remain ever grateful for your impact and the very best challenging year in my life & never going to forget it! Thanks for being such an excellent teacher!
