I believe that a calm, supportive environment is essential for learning. I aim to meet students exactly where they are, helping them navigate exam anxiety and realise what they are truly capable of achieving.
My career has always been a mix of education and the creative arts. I have spent 20 years in Higher Education supporting pre-university students, but I have also worked professionally as an actor and singer. I trained at Rose Bruford College (BA in Acting) and hold an MA in Theatre & Performance from Queen Mary University of London.
Today, I am based in Brighton, where I am often found walking my dog, Rufus, or singing and arranging music with local musicians and community choirs.
Because I have worked in the industry myself, I know exactly what it feels like to face an audience or handle performance nerves. I bring that practical, real-world experience into my tutoring, which is really helpful for building a student's confidence, preparing for auditions, or cracking the written elements of Drama and English.
I specialise in working with capable students who understand their subject but struggle to translate that knowledge into marks under exam conditions. Often, a student simply wants to improve their overall grade but finds it difficult to pinpoint exactly where they are losing marks. I help them bridge that gap, focusing on how to respond clearly, strategically, and calmly when it matters.
My background as a university lecturer and curriculum designer means I look at the big picture of a student's development. I help them identify hidden blind spots and design a structured, tailored approach that demystifies complex topics and makes them manageable.
Who I work with:
English Language (GCSE & A-Level): Structured support with exam technique, essay planning, precise use of evidence, and time management.
Drama & Theatre (GCSE & A-Level): Practical guidance with written papers, portfolios, and reflective writing—helping students link their performance choices directly to theory.
Drama School & Audition Preparation: Monologue selection, character work, and building authentic communication skills and confidence.
Admissions & Personal Statements: Helping students articulate their strengths and academic achievements clearly and authentically.
English Language & Literature (GCSE & A-Level)
- Understanding exactly what exam questions are asking.
- Planning and structuring clear, well-argued essay responses under timed conditions.
- Turning existing knowledge into marks, rather than relying on memorised model answers.
Drama: Exam Writing, Portfolios & Auditions
- Structuring Working Notebooks, Reflective Reports, and written exam answers.
- Applying precise drama terminology to articulate performance choices and practitioner theory.
- Providing constructive feedback on devised work to secure marks that are easily missed.
- Grounded audition coaching that avoids an over-rehearsed style.
Applications & Written Statements
- Shaping a clear, purposeful narrative for personal statements.
- Supporting academically strong students who find it difficult to write about their own achievements.
Great lesson - thank you so much
Parent feedback (A‑level Drama)
"Karen is a wonderful lady and tutor. My son felt lighter after a lesson with Karen. She is empowering, holds space for brain storming ideas and generating techniques. She also is kind and has offered reflective phone calls following up on his recent mocks, regularly offers advice and recommendations on excellent resources and extra curriculum activities. Highly recommended." - Maria
