About Me

I am a highly experienced biologist and university educator with a broad academic background spanning molecular and cellular biology, parasitology, microbiology, biochemistry and basics in ecology. My research has focused on the evolution and molecular mechanisms of microbial parasites, host–microbe interactions, and the role of the microbiota in health and disease. I have a strong interest in the One Health approach, which integrates human, animal, and environmental health, and have applied this framework in my work on host–parasite–microbiota systems.

My passion for natural history has been a consistent thread throughout my academic journey and led me to work at the Natural History Museum in London, where I studied the molecular evolution and ecology of freshwater ciliates. This early work deepened my interest in the evolutionary diversity of microbial eukaryotes and provided a foundation for my later transition into the study of microbial parasites.

Alongside my molecular research, I have long-standing interest in ecological studies of freshwater and forest habitats, and in the conservation of native wildlife species. With over two decades of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students in biological and biomedical sciences, I am committed to helping students build deep conceptual understanding and develop the skills needed to succeed in their academic journey.

NOTE: Before starting the lessons, I offer a free introductory session (15–20 minutes) to better understand your needs, goals, and current level. This meeting also provides an opportunity to discuss the course content, the desired pace, and to test the online connection. In this way, we can build together a tailored and personalised program from the very first real lesson

Je peux également donner des cours en français.

Tutor Experience

I began tutoring fellow students during my undergraduate biology studies in Switzerland, where I developed a strong foundation in molecular biology, microbiology, and zoology/ecology. Over the past two decades, I have taught and supervised undergraduate and postgraduate students at university level, including BSc, MSc, and PhD candidates in biological and biomedical sciences. My teaching has covered a wide range of topics—from cell biology, evolution, genetics, and host–parasite interactions to One Health. I have also mentored students in scientific writing, data analysis, oral presentation and research project development, and I take great pride in adapting my teaching approach to support diverse learning needs and academic goals. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of teaching students from a wide range of cultural and educational backgrounds, both in the UK and internationally, which has enriched my teaching practice and strengthened my commitment to inclusive and globally aware education.

Topic Expertise

I have over 20 years of experience teaching and researching across a wide spectrum of biological and biomedical sciences at Newcastle University. My subject expertise includes molecular and cellular biology, microbiology, parasitology, fundamentals in immunology, host–microbe interactions, and evolutionary biology. I have also taught topics in bioinformatics (including molecular phylogenetics), One Health, and microbial ecology, integrating current research and real-world applications into undergraduate and postgraduate curricula. My interdisciplinary teaching reflects the broad scope of my research—from the molecular mechanisms of parasitic protists to the ecological dynamics of host–microbiota systems. I am particularly experienced in helping students navigate complex biological systems, prepare for exams, and develop skills in scientific communication and critical thinking.
