About Me

I am a composer, musicologist, and philosopher of music with a PhD in Music from the University of Cambridge. I specialise in music theory, composition, analysis, academic writing in music, and university preparation.

My teaching combines university-level academic experience, professional creative practice, and many years of private music teaching. I work with students preparing for GCSE, A-Level, IB, undergraduate and postgraduate study, as well as university applications, personal statements, portfolios, interviews, composition coursework, score analysis, and research-based writing.

As a composer and researcher, I bring together practical musicianship, analytical clarity, and intellectual depth. My aim is to help students understand music more confidently, develop stronger arguments, write more persuasive essays, and produce more convincing creative work.

Tutor Experience

I have taught and supervised music at university level, including supervision at the University of Cambridge. My teaching has included musicology, analysis, listening, contemporary music, sound studies, aesthetics, essay feedback, and independent research guidance.

I currently teach Music at Abbey College Cambridge, working with GCSE and A-Level students on music theory, analysis, critical listening, composition, performance skills, and preparation for university entry.

I have also taught privately for many years across piano, violin, music theory, composition, improvisation, and musicianship. As Chair in Composition & Theory at Conservatoire One, I have taught contemporary composition, advanced theory and analysis, and score reading to students ranging from beginners to postgraduate level. I have also taught at the Music School of New York City and the Piano School of NYC, working with children, teenagers, and adults in both individual and group settings.

My lessons are structured around the student’s aims. In theory and analysis, I use explanation, score study, listening, and guided written work. In composition, I focus on form, notation, rhythm, harmony, texture, and the development of a distinctive musical voice. In academic writing and admissions work, I help students refine argument, structure, evidence, style, and intellectual clarity.

Topic Expertise

Music theory, harmony, analysis, composition, score study, academic writing in music, GCSE Music, A-Level Music, IB Music, undergraduate music, university applications, personal statements, portfolio preparation, interview preparation, research proposals, musicology, contemporary music, aesthetics, sound studies, piano, violin, improvisation, and musicianship.

I am especially well suited to students who need more than routine exam coaching: those preparing for university study, developing a composition portfolio, improving analytical essays, strengthening coursework, or seeking specialist feedback on musical and academic work.

Testimonials

Hannah Mason – Undergraduate Student (BA in Music), University of Cambridge
“My experience with studying Music in Contemporary Societies under Saman’s supervision has been enjoyable and insightful. Saman's supervisions are engaging and informative, and his feedback on our essays and our contributions to the sessions has challenged us, encouraging us to question various perspectives on the issues at hand. I feel that as a result, my critical thinking has developed, and I have been introduced to new ways of considering topics such as Free Jazz and Ethnomusicology; Saman questions our arguments and raises questions that allow us to consider the topics in more depth. I have particularly valued Saman's patience and kindness because these qualities have helped to foster a comfortable supervision environment in which I can be at liberty to voice my opinions.”

Emily Long – Undergraduate Student (BA in Music), University of Cambridge
“Studying with Saman has been engaging where we have been able to explore a variety of topics from different perspectives. He has helped us to think critically within our essays, encouraging us to evaluate our own arguments and take part in discussions that have been aided by his thoughtful input and the questions he asks, which lead us to our own conclusions. He also incorporated music-making into our sessions, such as experimental music, and helped us to engage with a genre that most of us hadn't played before. His feedback has been positive and useful, and I really look forward to his supervisions!”

Isaac Chan – Undergraduate Student (BA in Music), University of Cambridge
“Discussions led by Saman have been extremely useful – his questions have helped expand the scope of my thinking about world music topics into many different perspectives. He is well informed about world music topics and is always willing to assist and elaborate on topics where help is needed.
