Born in London, I went on to study Politics at Cambridge, before specialising in History for my PhD at Cambridge. Since then, I have taught History and related subjects at Cambridge, Oxford, London and Vienna for many years. I have published widely in some of the best academic journals in my discipline and my first book was published by Cambridge University Press as part of a prestigious series. I have also won numerous awards for my work and held fellowships in Germany, Austria and the USA.
I have been teaching undergraduate and master's courses since 2012, as a supervisor, lecturer or seminar leader, and I have been working as a tutor for even longer across subjects including History, History of Art, Philosophy and Political Science. My private students have included many undergraduates and postgraduates, and I pride myself on the excellent results they have gone on to achieve at universities across Britain!
I'm ready to help you at whatever stage you are at with your revision, essay or dissertation. I have been tutoring undergraduates and postgraduates at Britain's best universities for over a decade and helped countless students to build their confidence and get the results they were looking for. Sometimes this has been a one or two sessions for a short essay, or written feedback on a draft dissertation; sometimes it has been ongoing sessions over the course of years. Whatever it is, I'm happy to help.
I taught History and History of Art for many years at Cambridge, where I also did my PhD, and acted a Director of Studies, overseeing the recruitment process for new students, before moving to the University of Vienna. I have also taught at Oxford, Birkbeck and Chicago. I have published widely in some of the best journals in my field in Europe and America and won numerous major prizes for my work.
My specialisms include British, American and European history, social theory, critical theory, and political philosophy. I have taught everything from Plato to Kant and from the Middle Ages to the the rise of Fascism in the 20th century. I've supervised many undergrad dissertations and I am particularly able to help with issues of struturing, finding and using sources, and building sophisticated arguments that will get you the top grades.
European History, British History, Medieval History, Political Theory, Political Science, Philosophy
Gabriel’s calm and empathetic approach has had a noticeably positive impact on my anxious son, who now looks forward to his sessions. I highly recommend him.
Super helpful, Gabriel's comments provided clear guidence to help me structure my dissertation more effectively, refine my argument and make sure I am discussing everything I need to in order to make a deep analysis. His feedback has made me feel much more prepared for completing my essay.
Comments from students and parents include:
'Gabriel has been such a wonderful tutor. He is so helpful and great at giving feedback. Not only is Gabriel extremely knowledgeable and passionate about his subject, he can express even the most difficult topics in a comprehensible manner. I would definitely recommend Gabriel to everyone!'
'Gabriel is an excellent tutor... He was very knowledgeable about the subject and and also had the ability to clearly explain the content and concepts. I wouldn't have achieved an A without his tutoring. I would highly recommend him as a tutor.'
'Gabriel has been a great tutor... He is very flexible in his teaching style, very passionate, patient and always explains things in a comprehensible way. The best thing is that he asks you questions to push you that much further and expand your understanding and knowledge. I would definitely recommend him too. He is excellent!'
'Gabriel has been a real benefit in tutoring my daughter with her Oxford application, preparing for the history exam and possible interview. His inside knowledge of expectations and the application process is proving invaluable. He clearly enjoys tutoring, and this is evident through his enthusiasm, cheerfulness and willingness to prepare thoroughly for each lesson. He has suggested and discussed outside reading in her subject which has helped her to develop areas of particular interest and focus. He is intelligent and creative and has really helped smooth and expedite the process which isn't always easy between mum and teenage daughter!'
