About Me

Specialist tutor in undergraduate, master's and PhD/industry-level applied mathematics, mathematical analysis and computational mathematics.

I am an active mathematician with nearly 7 years of experience teaching university-level mathematics, including a 4-year teaching assistantship at UCL that funded my PhD, and over 600 hours of one-to-one tutoring through The Profs since 2022. I have taught dozens of STEM students across a range of disciplines and years of study, earning many 5-star reviews on Spires and Trustpilot (https://tinylink.net/4gSL5, https://tinylink.net/mCc5a), including one from a client whose grades rose from 34% to 76%, the largest possible jump within the UK grading system. I tutor across pure and applied mathematics, but specialise in teaching engineering and physics students, drawing on my background in scientific computing to frame ideas in a practical and useful way for these fields.

My tutoring follows a classical "chalk and talk" approach: sessions are planned rigorously but delivered conversationally, which lets me identify gaps in knowledge as they arise and adapt both the lesson and the longer-term plan accordingly. Alongside the mathematics, I emphasise study skills and tie the material to what my client is working on, contextualising it within their wider studies.

Every client receives a free initial consultation covering the overall goal, the challenging topics, the timescale, and a short assessment of where the conceptual issues lie. From here, I design a bespoke teaching plan that typically falls into one of two types. Long-term tuition runs over a term, an academic year, or the summer before a new course, and aims to build a lasting understanding at the client's pace. Exam preparation focuses on improving marks for an imminent exam, using past papers, course notes, and consultation to plan topics in the order most likely to have the greatest impact within the time available.

Client Reviews

Josh is incredibly helpful at explaining the tricky parts of problems and is quick to understand my difficulties and where i stand on certain equations and help me.

- Maths

Very helpful , going through concepts at a good pace offers expansion when needed.

- Mechanical Engineering

above and beyond
so helpful, tysm
not only do i have concrete advice to go off, but I have a more positive outlook on my growth too

- Physics

I found the lesson very helpful and relevant. Looking forward to applying what I have learnt to more questions. Knowledgeable and was able to assist with my various queries.
