About Me

I am Sian, I was born in Scotland, although living there for only three months doesn't really count! I grew up in Saudi Arabia, then moved to England where I went to school.
I have lived and worked in lots of different countries, including France, Germany, Greece, Australia, South Africa, Trinidad and Cyprus.
I love Formula One and Rugby. I enjoy walking, swimming, reading, doing puzzle books, spending time with family and friends as well as travelling and learning about new places and cultures.
My favourite animals are sharks and cats! I worked with sharks in the UK and in South Africa. And I have 5 pet cats!

Tutor Experience

I have been tutoring students for fifteen years and I have PGCE(HE) teaching qualification from Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge.
I have been with The Profs and Spires for two years tutoring A Level biology (AQA, EDUQAS, OCR, IB and AP biology). I also tutor undergraduate and postgraduate students with content support or dissertation assistance.
For the five years prior to working for The Profs and Spires, I was successfully supporting international students going to Sheffield University. I had been running support workshops for dental students as well as teaching Biology, Project Skills and Statistics, Academic Lab Skills and Critical reading for undergraduate students, as well as Bioscience, Laboratory Skills and Experimental Design, Critical Reading and Research Proposal for Postgraduate students. I have also taught on a critically acclaimed and award winning module called Prepare for Success which focuses on Learning skills, Life skills and Language Skills. I have a high success rate (>80%) for students attaining their required grades (over 60% for undergraduate and postgraduate students, and over 80% for dental students) and progressing to the University of Sheffield. I have also received positive comments from student feedback over the years.

Great lesson. We managed to cover a lot of information and emphasised areas that I was confused about and/or had little prior knowledge on.

- Biology

It was a great lesson, I learnt a lot of useful material from the first lesson. Everything was clear, and I felt completely comfortable asking questions when I didn't understand something.

‘I was fortunate to have Sian’s support at a crucial point in my academic journey. She didn’t just improve my A level Biology grade from Bs and Cs to an A*, she completely changed how I approached learning and problem-solving. Her encouragement played a huge role in my confidence towards the final exams and I genuinely don’t think I’d have met my Cambridge offer without her. Thank you Sian’

Mischa M:
“I went from failing every in-class test to only getting A’s & B’s in my real exams without having to re-sit any of them”
“Sian has taught me more in 1 hour a week than my teacher in school did in 8hours”

"5 tutors. Over the past few years I have had five tutors, and none have done nearly as much for me as Sian. The role of a tutor for many is to teach, improve a student’s grades and move on, and there is nothing wrong with that. But through my hardest years academically and emotionally, I had a pillar of support each week."

"I contacted Dr Sian Foch-Gatrell in the second semester of my third year of university, as I was diagnosed with ADHD and struggling with task paralysis and time management. I advised to make contact with an additional tutor and this ended up being Sian, based on her past reviews and credentials. Since Sian started tutoring me, I was quickly able to manage and plan all of my assignments, including my dissertation and increase my quality of work to the point that I graduated with a 2:1 after being predicted a 2:2 for a lot of my third year. Through her, I was able to understand what my lecturers wanted from me, how to properly lay out a professional thesis and how to collate, sort and analyse my metadata/literature review thesis for my final semester in my third year. "

"Honestly,... Sian ticks all the boxes. Friendly and professional, she became a mentor, friend,.. idol. She made the blood, sweat, and tears of A-Level Biology much, MUCH more bearable (even enjoyable!). I found a genuine interest in cell-wall permeability during digestion, and the Krebs cycle (fancy that!). A statement which sounds heavily sarcastic, but truly isn’t. I was wholly lost when I approached Sian, a student with a genuine interest in biology but struggled with the exam system; She bolstered me to achieve the grade I needed to apply for, and secure a place at a University in the USA. I am now looking to major in Cognitive Science- a student who, before Sian’s help, believed she was just “bad at science”. She gave me the skills I needed for the A-level exam, the moral support I needed for my sanity, and the confidence I needed to pursue science-based further education. I am truly grateful to Sian for everything."
