About Me

I qualified as a secondary school teacher of English in 2002 and have been teaching and tutoring in mainstream, independent and specialist schools for 18 years.

I am passionate about English, but I do not expect my students to be. If a student hates Shakespeare, finds poetry strange and confusing or loathes writing speeches that is okay. I will do everything I can to support them, whether it is to achieve a grade 4 or an A*.

I ask a lot of challenging questions and will set written tasks to be completed in preparation for each tutorial, but I will also regularly give clear and detailed feedback on how to improve.

Tutor Experience

I have extensive experience teaching students across the ability range from KS3 to A level and have catered to a wide range of special needs, including: talented and gifted, ASD, dyslexia, anxiety and ADHD. I am also experienced in supporting EAL students.

* I have prepared students for a variety of boards including; AQA, Edexcel, Edexcel iGCSE, OCR, Cambridge iGCSE, Cambridge iA Level, and WJEC.
* I have helped students successfully prepare for 13+, entrance and scholarship examinations to independent schools including: Harrow, Oundle, Uppingham and Royal Hospital School.
* I am a GCSE Examiner, which means I have exceptional insight on the assessment process for English Literature and English Language and can provide students with a clear and precise understanding of how to perform well.
* I have experience teaching both A level English Literature and A level English Language, and I have supported students completing a wide variety of NEAs and coursework.
* I have supported EAL students preparing for Edexcel iGCSE English as a Second Language
* I am able to provide detailed written and/or video feedback, which has helped many students achieve, or succeed, their target grades.

Topic Expertise

* I am able to support students studying GCSE and A Level English Literature and English Language.
* I am able to support students with additional needs such as dyslexia, autism and anxiety.
* I am able to support EAL students.

Testimonials

Saffron is a highly experienced teacher, and her love of her subject is infectious. She understands what students need to do to achieve the highest grades in exams, and her structured approach motivates them to achieve. I would highly recommend Saffron as a tutor. My daughter started working with Saffron just after her Year 11 mocks, after being really disappointed with the 7s she had been predicted for both English Language and English Literature GCSE. She lacked motivation and confidence in the whole essay writing process, and had no idea what to do to improve. Her weekly sessions with Saffron taught her how to write a timed, structured essay, and the deeper themes, analysis and language she needed to include in her exam responses - at a whole different level to what she was getting taught at school. She ended up delighted with getting 9s in both English Language and Literature at GCSE. She enjoyed the experience to the extent that she is now taking A level English Literature at 6th form, and is choosing to continue to have regular sessions with Saffron.
