About Me

I have been a tutor for nearly twenty years. Together with an MA and PhD in International Relations (both from Durham University) I also hold a law degree from Northumbria University and am a recognised Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I have successfully supported thousands of students to achieve their academic goals and have taught extensively across the disciplines of International Relations, Politics, International Public Policy and the social sciences at both undergraduate and postgraduate-levels for world leading universities including Durham University, The Open University and Queen Mary, University of London. A specialist in academic skills and guidance, including essay and dissertation writing, I get the best out of every student by equipping them with the tools to develop their knowledge and enhance their self-confidence for both academic and professional success.

Tutor Experience

**NEW TO SPIRES** As an experienced programme lead and online tutor, with 20 years tutoring experience (17 years online) I have designed and delivered modules across the disciplines of International Relations (IR), Politics and International Public Policy (IPP). At Durham University I taught introductory International Relations; Critical Theory; War; Contemporary Security and East Asian Regionalism (a mix of undergraduate and postgraduate). For The Open University I have taught general IR, Development Studies, History of Political Thought/Political Philosophy and interdisciplinary modules spanning the social sciences and humanities (all undergraduate). For Queen Mary, University of London (QMUL) I teach postgraduate distance learning modules including Contemporary World Politics; War and International Security; Globalisation and the International Political Economy of Development, and Theories and Concepts in Public Policy. I am also the Postgraduate Distance Learning Dissertation Coordinator within the School of Politics and International Relations at QMUL - a role which involves working closely with students to help them plan and design their Master's dissertation. For Plymouth University I teach Economic Diplomacy and Development, and Regional Geopolitics at postgraduate level.

My approach to teaching is to give students the tools to develop their knowledge and skills, offering guidance and constructive criticism, always intended to maximise potential.

Testimonials

“I would highly recommend Paul as an online tutor. I was a student on an online MSc in International Public Policy, with Queen Mary University London, from September 2020 to September 2022.

Paul was the course leader and tutor for the first term of the course and demonstrated an excellent level of professionalism in the design and delivery of our weekly webinar sessions. Paul also showed a very human approach and was able to make everyone feel comfortable and guide us through the formative stages of the course. He helped me deal with steep curve of study at a Master's level and helped me gain the foundational knowledge I was able to build on to successfully complete the course. This is certainly a learning experience I look back on fondly. I wish Paul all the best in his future teaching work.”

"Dr Paul Hayman led two modules in my International Relations MA. He was an outstanding lecturer/tutor. He was supportive, and when it came to seminars he used astute questioning to get the best out of those in attendance, ensuring they were challenged whilst still ensuring that they fully understood key concepts and nuances under discussion. His oral and written feedback was clear and personalised, and provided me with the opportunity to develop my written work in subsequent assignments, ensuring that I was able to improve my academic writing which enabled me to achieve a distinction across all modules.

Further to this, Paul was generous with his time, even offering academic advice on further study. He managed the dissertation module and paired me with an outstanding dissertation tutor. His organisation was second to none, he was highly organised and his communication with the group of students was clear and enabled us to navigate the degree with confidence."

"I went back to academia as a mature student and was very concerned that with a background in science I would find the discussion and essay writing difficult. Completing the first module with Paul was really a God-send. He immediately put us all at ease with his unflappable style, managing to be both reassuring and also searching with his questioning during tutorials. It can be hard to manage a group online but Paul gave everyone a chance to speak and encouraged those who were naturally reticent, to have their say. He managed to explain concepts really well and allowed us, through guided discussion, to explore the themes ourselves. This left us with a deeper understanding of each topic but moreover a real desire to know more. Paul was easily the best tutor we had on the course - I never felt like I could go to a tutorial unprepared because his style of questioning was sufficiently detailed to uncover material unknown, but also because Paul inspires loyalty amongst his students and I had a genuine desire to please him!"
