I am an experienced English teacher, tutor and university lecturer. I have worked in UK higher education for over 15 years and have taught English literature at the universities of Cambridge, Southampton and Huddersfield. I am also a fully qualified secondary English teacher working in Cambridgeshire, an examiner for a major exam board and a professional online tutor working with English schools, the National Tutoring Programme, as well as UK and international tutoring agencies. I also offer professional proofreading and copyediting services.
I have a PhD in English Literature from the University of Cambridge. I have taught and researched English literature at Pembroke College, University of Cambridge and the Faculty of English, University of Cambridge and was College Lecturer and Director of Studies in English Literature at Newnham College, Cambridge. I'm also experienced with Oxbridge admissions and interviews. My research specialism is eighteenth-century and Romantic period literature.
I tutor secondary English and English literature, including 13+, 16+, IB, GCSE / IGCSE and A-Level. I also help with BA, MA/MPhil, MRes and PhD dissertations, assignments, personal statements, applications and research proposals in English literature. While my expertise lies in the field of English studies, I have tutored PGCE, nursing, psychology and business postgraduate students with their written assignments too.
My teaching is attentive to the student’s needs and current level of learning. I like to start by setting and agreeing on achievable goals and planning a realistic curriculum for achieving these throughout our sessions. I like to give feedback to students that is encouraging and compassionate, while rigorously and constructively pointing out errors and offering positive directions for improvement. I encourage a questioning attitude and big-picture thinking about first-hand material – moving from close reading to an understanding of a text’s larger cultural implications.
I teach widely across the English and English literature curriculum and beyond. I am experienced at supporting you through exam preparation, GCSE English, IGCSE English, A level English literature, essay writing, academic English, dissertations, Oxbridge admissions, personal statements and research proposals.
AQA, OCR, Edexcel, Cambridge ICE exam boards.
Pearson Edexcel examiner for English literature
she is very good and she also does her best and also try's to relate to me as i share how I view things.
I learn a lot every time I have a session with her about English
I had lessons with Dr Ildiko Sengei to help me prepare for university applications. I am applying to Cambridge, amongst others. Ildiko helped me to prepare for the written assessment and with interview practise.
Ildiko always prepared thoroughly for our sessions, so we made excellent use of our time together. She also suggests lots of prep material, articles as well as books. She is super approachable and very supportive. Working with Ildiko has helped me to improve my work and also boosted my confidence.
This class was arranged at the request of the parents, and it took up the teacher's weekend time to correct students' essaies. Thank you for your dedication.
My son is very particular when it comes to choosing teachers, and every class with Lldiko makes him feel like he's gaining something new. She is able to tailor the lesson content to the students' needs, rather than repeating the same material that the students have already mastered, like some other teachers do.
Fiona is benefitting greatly from these lessons- and enjoying them. Thank you.
Excellent
Mrs.Ildiko's class was very helpful for me as my GCSE's were coming up, she helped me construct my essays with more confidence and write in a more clear fashion. If you are looking for confidence in your writing Mrs. Ildiko is the perfect option.
Very educational I learned a lot about how to use commas
Her teaching is imbued with unwavering confidence, and her advanced knowledge is undeniably beneficial.
"Ildiko taught me during my undergraduate years at university, it was because of her enthusiasm and engaging lessons that I kept choosing her modules all through my time at university. Ildiko goes above and beyond with her help, guidance, and support as a teacher and her feedback on work is extremely detailed and beneficial.
I have also had Ildiko’s guidance as a supervisor on during my postgraduate studies and her knowledge and support has been invaluable to me during these difficult times. I would recommend Ildiko as a trustworthy and engaging tutor." -- Katie
"Ildiko is a fantastic tutor. She is conscientious, attentive and cares deeply about her students' progress and achievements. The level of feedback she gives on written work is exceptional. I would recommend her very highly." -- Tim
"I was fortunate enough to have Ildiko as my supervisor for an MA project last year. She was a fantastic support and excellent advisor as I worked to complete my thesis. Always providing detailed and meaningful feedback both written and in discussion. Her questioning techniques allowed me to draw my own conclusions and progress my ideas and thinking without feeling hemmed in or forced to adopt any position except those I wished to adopted. If you seek an insightful, professional and knowledgeable tutor, I cannot recommend Ildiko highly enough." -- Lewis
