About Me

My Drama system is unique. All aspects of Drama assessment - Devising, Rehearsing, Performing (or however your syllabus/course refers to them...) rely on an understanding of 'E.L.F.'
This acronym stands for Expectations (genre, practitioner, staging...), Learning (purpose of performance, what it depicts/demonstrates/teaches...) and Feelings (what emotional 'journey' do you want the audience to go on ?), and it drives every element of my Drama tuition...

Regarding English, I have two main roles on this learning-platform.: Captain English, and Doctor English...

As 'Captain English' :
I promise you GUARANTEED GRADE 'UPPAGE' from UNIQUE, tried-and-trusted tuition-methods...

I teach LITERATURE via fascinating and varied perspectives:
PLIGHT - all narratives have an issue or problem which needs to be resolved...
THE 'CAPITALIST' OVERVIEW - who has the money, the power - how does that shape the relationships in the text...
BIOGRAPHY - how does the writer's experience and time-period influence the text's themes and ideas?
DRAMATIC RETELLING - can you imagine howa prose-text might appear as a stage-play?
'IN THE NEWS' - can you translate the WHOLE text into ONE newpaper-article 'key-paragraph' ?

I teach ENGLISH via:
Planning FICTION-WRITING using Explain Describe Narrate...
Inclusion of Key-Technical Features: LEXIS and SYNTAX - CRAFTING AND DRAFTING - COLOURS, PARAGRAPHING with the 'TIP-TOP' ELEMENTS
FEELINGS, SPEECH/REFLECTION (and appropriate punctuation)...
AND: Planning argumentative/persuasive, expository/discursive, narrative/personal, and descriptive essay-types

And, 'Doctor English'...?
Well... I'm an expert in AFL - assessment for learning. I'm of the opinion that EVERY 'outstanding' teacher ought to be using this to boost student-grades. But I'm not sure that they are...
How many times have you been given a grade and targets, but came away with no real idea on how to improve?
Ring a bell?
I serve as a 'medic' for all of your English 'ailments' - anything you don't understand, even though your teacher has tried with you, you'll get your answers and some understanding from ME.

"Michael's teaching is well-prepared, intuitive and wholly appropriate for our son's needs. His progress has been secure and - most importantly - happy and collaborative.

Michael is a great listener and facilitator. He is caring and reliable, and his professionalism and teaching-ability are both top-level, and therefore extremely praiseworthy and inspiring.

I cannot recommend his skills, his humanity and his dedication highly enough!"

- Dr Lin Hu, Senior Lecturer, Sun Yat Sen University, Guangzhou, People's Republic of China

" Right now, I'm a Leader of Learning across 'Catholic Schools, Western Australia', and can gratefully state that Michael has been a key figure in my progess to such a level of attainment and responsibility in the profession of Education.
We first began working together when I was a young novice, and he the experienced, seasoned professional. He mentored me without obligation to do so - as he did all younger aspirants to his level of professionalism, vocation and skill - giving his time and energy freely in the service of developing the profession as a whole.
I wholeheartedly recommend him as a 'servant of learning' who will always 'make the difference' in any educational context he finds himself!"
