Hi there, my name is David. I’ve taught philosophy and politics at two Russell Group universities over the past three and a half years, and I’m an experienced examiner, having marked and moderated close to a thousand essays. I’ve also published research in leading academic philosophy journals.
I can help you get to grips with difficult concepts, improve your essay writing, and succeed in your exam preparation. If you think I might be a good fit, I’d be happy to have an informal chat.

I hold a PhD in Politics and International Studies with a specialisation in political theory from the University of Warwick. Before that, I completed an MSc in Political Theory (with distinction) at the London School of Economics and a BA in Geography (with first class honours) at the University of Oxford.
Alongside my research, I’ve taught at various undergraduate levels. Most recently, I was a Teaching Fellow at Queen Mary University of London and a Visiting Research Fellow at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo. Before beginning my academic career, I worked for a year as a journalist in Denmark.
Outside of work, I enjoy going to concerts, running, and hiking.
I’m an experienced university teacher in political theory and political philosophy, with several years of seminar-leading and essay-marking under my belt. I’ve taught at both Queen Mary University of London and the University of Warwick, where I led seminars on modules ranging from the history of political thought to advanced topics in political philosophy.
My teaching has consistently received excellent feedback from students. At Queen Mary, 85–100% of students rated my seminars “good” or “very good,” with one describing my seminar structure and engagement as “perfect.” At Warwick, 100% of students in my most recent evaluations agreed that my sessions were engaging, well-structured, and encouraged active participation.
I create inclusive, focused learning environments that help students deepen their understanding of politics and philosophy. I also offer expert support with essay writing across the humanities and social sciences. Having marked close to 1,000 university essays, I know what markers are looking for—and I can help with structure, clarity, argumentation, and how to demonstrate originality.
Whether you're preparing for exams, working on coursework, or just looking to get to grips with key thinkers and concepts, I’ll tailor sessions to your needs. I tutor students at university and school level, both online and in person (in London).
POLITICS: I have deep and extensive knowledge of both contemporary and historical political theory, and I offer expert tutoring and supervision in this field from undergraduate to postgraduate level. In addition, I have a strong working knowledge of other areas of political science and can support students with essay writing across the full range of politics modules.
PHILOSOPHY: As a published author in a leading peer-reviewed philosophy journal—with two further papers underway—I have a thorough grasp of contemporary (analytic) political and moral philosophy. I can help students master both the content and the distinctive style of philosophical argumentation and essay writing, which many find especially challenging.
GEOGRAPHY: I hold a BA in Geography from the University of Oxford, where I focused on human geography and graduated with distinction, placing 11th in a cohort of 85. I support A-level students with subject learning, personal statement writing, and interview preparation. I also assist undergraduates with coursework and essay writing in human geography.
APPROACH: In all subjects, I help students make sense of complex ideas by breaking them down step by step—starting with the core concepts, and gradually layering in more advanced insights. I'm particularly adept at demystifying difficult and abstract theories in politics and philosophy.
I also provide detailed guidance on how to meet assessment criteria. Drawing on my experience as an examiner, I help students understand how essays and exam scripts are marked, so they can write with greater clarity, confidence, and impact—and ultimately, achieve stronger results.
