I specialise in nineteenth-century English literature and culture, a field in which I've published two books and over a dozen articles, so if that's what you want to learn about you're in the right place; however, I am a generalist at heart, and I'm comfortable teaching a range of subjects, including: any other period of English literature; comparative literature including Italian, French and Spanish; poetics, aesthetics, literary theory, and academic writing. I've taught courses on all these in various institutions, helping several students launch their postgraduate careers in some of the best universities in the world.
If you're interested in these subjects and would like a hand, I will take you, your ideas and any issues you may have seriously, do my best to understand what you need and how I can help you achieve it, come up with a plan that makes sense for you and what you want to achieve, and give you detailed and honest feedback. I won't dumb things down, but I do like to be perfectly clear, so if you feel that anything I say is obscure, do let me know and I will do my very best to get through.
I believe that teaching, especially in the humanities, is about helping students _want_ to learn. This can be done by finding out what your interests, skills and strengths are and building on those: if we build a basis of real interest (and it _can_ be built), studying will be twice as easy. To do so, I like to be interactive, and, if you will, ask you to do a bit of self-reflection by assessing your strengths and weaknesses and where the specific difficulties may lie: that way, we can build a personalised plan to assess what to work on and how best to work on it.
I got my early degrees in Modern Languages and Literatures (majoring in English and Spanish) from the University of Trieste and a PhD in English and Comparative Literature from the University of Warwick, where I was a tutor between 2012 and '18. Between 2020 and mid-'25 I was an assistant professor of English language and literature at Bilkent University in Ankara, and now I'm back in the UK.
I have taught mostly at university level, though I did teach younger students as a tutor in the Brilliant Club, and I am familiar with A-level English requirements, so I'm happy to work with KS5 students as well as undergraduates and postgraduates. At Warwick I worked mainly for the department of English and Comparative Literary Studies, for which I taught various courses in Victorian and modern literature and literary theory, as well as for the Physics department, where I taught how to communicate scientific ideas. More recently, I have taught such topics as research and writing techniques, Victorian literature, aesthetics and aestheticism, the literary history of madness, literary theory, and poetry and drama more broadly.
In short, anything related to English literature, including but by no means limited to the 19th century, the period about which I've published the most. I am comfortable teaching most topics to do with American, French, Italian, Spanish literature as well. I'm also competent in a range of more conceptual stuff such as poetics, literary theories, and philosophy, especially aesthetics, on which I've also published. I've also taught writing and communication more generally, I have worked as a copy-editor and translator for years, and in that capacity I have already helped many students, postgraduates and academics make their work as good as it can be.
Andrea has been an absolutely outstanding tutor, and I could not recommend him more highly. Over the past few months, his support, guidance and encouragement have made an enormous difference to my work and to my confidence.
He is incredibly patient, thoughtful and knowledgeable. He explains things with clarity and patience, while also helping you improve at a much deeper level. What I appreciated most was the care he put into every session: he always took the time to understand what I needed, gave detailed and constructive feedback, and helped me approach the work with much more clarity and confidence.
Working with Andrea has been a genuine pleasure. He is professional, kind, reliable and clearly very committed to helping his students do their best. I am extremely grateful for all his help and would highly recommend Andrea to anyone looking for a thoughtful, supportive and dedicated tutor.
