After a fruitful career in biotechnology, I transitioned two years ago to teaching Science, IGCSE Chemistry and Physics and will be teaching Biology this fall. It’s been profoundly satisfying to engage with young learners and help them to appreciate science beyond what is described in a textbook. Because of my academic and industrial training/experience, I teach from the point of view of a career scientist, where fundamentals are the bedrock upon which research and discoveries are built. For me, science has been pragmatic, fun and rewarding on many levels.
With over 15 years of postgraduate training and biotechnology industry experience, I have a proven track record of leading and collaborating on complex research projects leveraging proteomics-based systems biology, from conception to therapeutic target discovery and translational into the clinic. My academic background includes postdoctoral training in Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School, a PhD in Clinical Chemistry from McGill University, a BSc in Biochemistry with Molecular Biology from Concordia University and a Diploma in Chemical Technology from Dawson College.
As a teacher - tutor, my superpower is to bend and contextualize difficult concepts and illustrate with familiar examples that are relatable and easy to understand; to meet each learner where they are. My goal is to bring vitality to the subject matter and witness ideas crystalize in the mind and eyes of learners.
IGCSE Chemistry, Physics and Science at Pinheiros Learning Center in Portugal (12-18 year old learners).
Undergraduate Biochemistry.
My approach is to draw on examples from 3 decades of University and Biotechnology, illustrating practical examples in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Another great session, my daughter is thoroughly enjoying her lessons with Mike! Thank you 😊
A great first session with lots covered.
My daughter is looking forward to the next one!
Thank you 😊
"Mike has a unique ability to address and make connections between various "separate" fields of science. Because he understands deeply how things work, he can explain things very effectively in layman's terms. He's able to find analogies that will already be familiar to the learner so that they can understand and relate to complex processes.
He has a deep understanding of core topics in Chemistry, Biology and Physics, and shares his appreciation and wonder for their interconnectedness.
He has been a huge asset in our program. Having taught for over 20 years, I wish every young person had the chance to be exposed to Mike's thinking and excitement around anything related to science. And best of all, they'll get it"
