I hold a BA in English from Oxford; I then went on to do an MA and PhD at the University of London (Queen Mary).
I've worked in academia for over 10 years (lecturing jobs at the universities of Oxford and Birmingham, etc.) which I juggle with parenting, and my writing career. Over the past 3-4 years, I've also been building up experience as a private tutor in English and History.
As a professional writer (articles in The Times and Guardian, essays on BBC Radio), I love the nuts and bolts of helping students craft essays, commentaries, creative writing pieces and personal statements. I want students to have fun with the subject - and share my love of literature and fascination with history! When I'm not teaching or writing, I love cooking Italian food, listening to electronic music, and walking in nature.
2021-3 Tutoring Experience
GCSE English Literature and Language
Tutored students one-to-one online. Helped students understand literary texts (eg. Macbeth, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde), write short essays, and answer comprehension questions. I use sample questions and past papers to practice skills on the spot: I also use imaginative techniques (imagine yourself in the story) or simple powerpoint presentations with images to help guide students.
A-Level English
Worked one-to-one online with students on extended essays and coursework (Cormac McCarthy's The Road, Donne poems, The Great Gatsby). Worked with clients to improve grades for university entrance. For example, working with a recent client on her essay skills improved her grade from A/B to A*: she achieved three A*s and a place at St. Catherine's College, Oxford University.
A-Level History
Worked one-to-one online to homeschool a student working on A-Level History International Option. Provided fun quizzes, interactive learning, and easy-to-understand PowerPoints.
Exam boards worked with: AQA, OCR, Edexcel, Cambridge
2012-present
Lecturing experience
Teach undergraduate and postgraduate students English literature in historical context. Face-to-face and online. Lectures, seminars and small group tutorials (eg. Departmental Lecturer in English, Lady Margaret Hall, University of Oxford 2023-present, Lecturer in English, Trinity College, Oxford, 2021-3)
Teaching Philosophy:
