Hi, I'm Maria. I'm a Cambridge English graduate with a life-long love of literature and the creative arts. I have 6 years experience as an English and Media Studies tutor, and I continue to enjoy learning more about my subjects as much as I enjoy teaching them! I aim to create a friendly, discussion-based environment where my students are free to ask questions and to explore their ideas in greater detail than they can in a classroom setting. Developing self-confidence and inspiring a genuine enjoyment of the subject are at the core of my approach. While I don't place my emphasis on numbers and letters, all of my students have gone on to meet and exceed their personal targets, among them many well deserved A, A* and Level 9 grades.
I have been working as a tutor since 2017. Over the last few years, I have transitioned to online learning in order to work with a wider range of students in the UK and beyond. Since completing my Cambridge degree, I have begun to offer coaching for the ELAT exam and Oxbridge interviews. I am a former contributor to AS Blog English, one of the most widely used revision sources for the Edexcel course, and am currently working on an updated revision resource, literatiblog on Substack.
I primarily teach the following subject areas:
GCSE language and literature (AQA, Edexcel and iGSCE Edexcel)
A level literature (Edexcel, Edexcel IAL, AQA and OCR)
AS level language (Edexcel, Edexcel IAL)
GCSE media studies (WJEC, Eduqas)
A Level media studies (WJEC)
ELAT Oxbridge entrance exam
Personal statement guidance and editing
Academic English for university
My areas of expertise are essay skills and academic writing, Oxbridge entrance coaching, and A Level English Literature. I have a special interest in science fiction and particularly enjoy working with students who study the Science and Society unit of the Edexcel A Level.
Wonderfully supportive and encouraging!
My son thoroughly enjoys his English Literature lessons with Maria and benefits greatly from them.
Excellent Tutor, incredibly supportive!
Thank you.
Super helpful, as always! Thank you :)
Maria's tutoring was incredibly helpful! She helped me condense my ideas into a workable, logical thesis for my paper. Her adeptness at structuring essays and stringing together key concepts is remarkable. I highly recommend working with her!
Hi Maria, just thought you'd like to hear I got the offer from Oxford! Thank you so much for your support and feedback, I couldn't have done it without you - Keiaron, Oxbridge applicant
I just wanted to say thank you so much for helping me with my English. I managed to get nines in both exams because of it - Anika, iGCSE student
Just wanted to say thank you ...I managed to get an A (almost an A*) in English and I honestly don't think I would have achieved it without your tips and tricks, especially in poetry - Becca, A Level Literature student
Although we only worked together for a short period of time, it genuinely made a huge difference, and I definitely would not have felt as good as I do about the exams without you. You raised my confidence so much and could not have been more helpful. - Amina, A Level Literature student
Maria tutored my daughter for her Oxbridge ELAT 2022 exams and then for her college interviews. My daughter enjoyed her tutor sessions finding them extremely useful. Maria was always well-prepared, positive and encouraging. I have no hesitation in recommending her as a tutor. - Judith, parent of ELAT student.
Maria tutored my daughter Clara as she prepared for her A level English Lit. Her help and support were invaluable in giving Clara real confidence in what to expect with the exams and great guidance on how to prepare. Maria not only knew exactly what to focus on but had a brilliant way of communicating that enabled Clara to feel clear and confident. I have already recommended Maria to friends and think any student who receives support from Maria is very fortunate. - Caroline, parent of A level student
