About Me

My name is Kathryn Govier. I am passionate about creating a more sustainable world and empowering young people to become change makers and leaders.

I have been teaching for 13 years in both the UK and the Philippines. This year I am taking a year away from the Secondary classroom to pursue an MA in Education for a Sustainable Environment at the University of Manchester.

Student wellbeing is also very important to me, having supported many students through the difficulties of the IBDP and preparing for university applications. I want all my students to become emotional scientists, as social and emotional learning is just as important as your academics.

Outside teaching, I aim to live sustainably through a mainly plant based diet, only buying preloved items and cycling or using public transport. I love staying active through hiking, swimming and cycling. And find peace when I am scuba diving in our amazing oceans.

Tutor Experience

I completed my Secondary Geography teacher training at the University of Southampton in 2011. I worked for a UK state school for 6 years teaching primarily Geography (GCSE), but also Religious Education, Health, and Careers. I then moved to the Philippines to work in an international school for the last 8 years. Here I taught IB Geography, IB ESS and AP Human Geography.

I have completed IBDP courses in Geography, ESS and the Extended Essay. I have examined for IB Geography for both Paper 1 and the IA, as well as examining for OCR GCSE Geography.

I have guided 100s of students through their exams, guiding them to develop concrete knowledge and understanding of the syllabus as well as exemplary exam skills. 1:1 sessions with students allow me to fully understand the individual need, whether it be creating a bank of quality case study evidence or understanding how to critically evaluate in essays, and then providing the necessary resources for them.

I can support with acquiring knowledge as well as developing a concrete understanding of any unit. If you are struggling to grasp a concept in class or want to diversify your case study evidence I can support you with this. I have a vast array of resources from all Geography and ESS units that I can use with you, as well as creating your own review materials.

EXAM TECHNIQUE
Understanding the expectations of the exam board is tricky. You may have exceptional knowledge and understanding of the course content, but without the necessary exam skills you won't be able to get those top grades. I can support you with:
- comprehending exam questions (specifically the expectations of each command term)
- how to concisely communicate through constructing clear and coherent answers
- supporting your essays with relevant and appropriate evidence, and showing synthesis and evaluation
We will achieve this through breaking down exam questions, marking responses together and answering exam questions. I can provide you with full written and verbal feedback to ensure you keep improving your answers.

REVISION
If you are struggling to master the art of revision, I can also help you to find an approach that works for you. I can help you understand the psychology behind different approaches and guide you through the techniques. I can provide you with materials as well as be your cheerleader through the stress of completing exams. If you have found the stress of exams overwhelming I can also help you to become an emotional scientist who has a skill set to overcome difficulties you might face.

INTERNAL ASSESSMENT
I can guide you through how to achieve marks from each section of the IA. We can discuss and develop ideas, but I cannot provide written feedback.
