About Me

My name is Philippa Monk. I am currently doing a PhD in Global and Imperial History and the History of Science and Medicine at the University of Oxford. I graduated with a BA in History from the University of Oxford in 2020, coming in the top 3% of my cohort, gaining a distinction in all papers in both Preliminary Examinations and Final Honours School. I completed a Masters in World History at the University of Cambridge, gaining a distinction. My Masters thesis was chosen by the examination board to be deposited in the Seeley History Library at Cambridge, and has subsequently won the Jane Willis Kirkaldy Senior Prize for an outstanding essay in the history of science, medicine, and technology at the University of Oxford.
I have offered admissions and access supports to students seeking an Oxbridge education since 2017. As someone who attended Oxford’s outreach summer school, UNIQ, I understand personally the profound effect that a supportive admissions mentor can have on one’s confidence during the application and interview process. Since 2020, I have also privately tutored IB and A-Level History, the HAT, and helped students looking to take part in history essay competitions. I have helped several students get into Oxbridge and other desired universities, including raising one student's grades from a predicted C to an A at A-Level. I also have experience tutoring GCSE-level students (including some with SEN requirements) in English, Maths, and science.

Tutor Experience

I have been working as a part-time admissions mentor for seven years, and a tutor for four.
As an admissions tutor, I have provided:

- Practice interviews, including interviews based on personal statements, submitted work, and unseen articles.
- History Aptitude Test preparation, including general lessons on source analysis and marking practice papers.
- Reading lists and additional materials to help students develop their interests.
- Feedback and support on personal statements.

As a tutor, I have worked with undergraduates completing dissertations; First Year undergraduates seeking content and exam support; History IB and A-Level students; and English, Maths, and Science GCSE students. Most recently, I have also started helping students prepare for Y13 entrance level examinations.
