About Me

I am an enthusiastic maths tutor and a research mathematician. I completed my PhD at Cardiff University, after graduating with a First in my Bachelor's and a Distinction in my Master's from the University of Cambridge. With years of experience in both studying and teaching maths, I understand the challenges students face and how to help them succeed.

I also worked as a STEP examiner for Cambridge Assessment for three years, so I understand how the exams are marked and what examiners are looking for. Through my tutoring, I aim to break down complex ideas, build problem-solving skills, and make maths feel more intuitive.

Tutor Experience

During my PhD, I ran interactive group tutorials for undergraduate mathematics students, helping them develop their understanding through discussion and problem-solving.
I led maths support workshops for undergraduate students, from a range of subjects including mathematics, engineering, economics and medicine. These were 1-on-1 drop-in sessions in which students would bring a problem or a concept and I would guide them towards a better understanding and help them develop the skills they needed to solve such problems on their own.

Topic Expertise

In addition to STEP and other admissions assessment preparation, I am able to teach A-level maths and further maths, as well as most undergraduate mathematics and theoretical physics modules.

Testimonials

"Robert was extremely helpful. He was enthusiastic and encouraging, and I always left each session with a deeper, more complete understanding of the concepts we tackled." (STEP student)

"Robert has been absolutely incredible. The way he breaks down each topic makes each aspect so clear and easy to understand. I left each tutorial fully confident of the topic. His notes made during each tutorial were perfect to look back on and the resources he found allowed me to consolidate my knowledge even further. I wouldn’t get the grades I do without his help. Thank you Robert." (A level Further Maths student)

"As a 3rd year undergraduate, it is difficult to find a tutor that can explain and go through problems for this level of study. Robert helped me with a wide range of subjects, from Theoretical Maths to General Relativity. He explained many misconceptions I had, which for subjects like Theoretical Physics, can be very subtle and easy for students to misinterpret, and Robert nailed down the small details that prevent me from understanding concepts. In some of my modules, problem solutions are often vague and Robert helped go through the solutions and walked me through the lecturer’s train of thought. Sometimes, I can get the same answer as the solutions, but have the wrong reasoning for it, which is very common in theoretical subjects in my experience—which can lead to an even more difficult time as I would not realise that I have a misconception, or gap in knowledge. Robert saved me a lot of time by spotting them and setting me straight so I can effectively solve related problems. He gave me hints to problems I was close to solving (in the chat) outside our lesson time when he really didn’t have to, so I could use our lesson time more effectively, to learn and go through topics that I am having more trouble with. Lastly, I genuinely enjoyed our lessons, Robert kept things interesting, and he is a lively person and that keeps my own motivation up as well, as I am not someone who is naturally optimistic. I cannot recommend Robert enough and I am very grateful that I found him!" (Undergraduate Physics student)
