I have been tutoring biosciences for 14 years, and absolutely love working with students to achieve their goals.
I'm also an author and speaker: my nonfiction book on the history and mythology of monsters came out in 2024, 'Enchanted Creatures: Our Monsters and Their Meanings' (W&N, 5 international deals) and before that I wrote 'Planta Sapiens' (Little Brown, '23; 10 international deals) on plant intelligence with a philosopher of science. I have worked at London's Natural History Museum and the Zoological Society of London, spoken for radio, TEDX and various events.
My own natural history 'cabinet of curiosity' contains many amazing specimens such as nautilus shells, beaver skulls and insects that can illustrate biological topics! Occasionally I rear live exotic butterflies and moths at home. My book 'Feathers and Eggshells' about the birds of Hampstead Heath was published in 2000.
Over the past 14 years, I have tutored hundreds of students, primarily A-Level and university applicants as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students. I work with students with a wide range of abilities and concerns, and I really enjoy helping students develop their academic abilities in a holistic way.
I have also taught in several schools, giving regular revision classes to students and run a number of intensive A-Level revision courses, in-person and online, for other agencies.
The ubiquitous feedback from my teaching work has been that students achieve much higher marks than they expected and enjoyed their subject in a way that they had not before. In many cases, the benefits of sessions extend into other subjects, as students develop a more confident academic approach.
I have worked extensively with most A-level and IB biology syllabi, as well as university-level biological sciences. My areas of personal interest are behavioural ecology and physiology.
My specialisms are:
* Year 12/13 biology. I work with these boards: OCR (A&B), EdExcel (A&B), AQA, CIE, Pre-U and IB.
* University and postgraduate entrance for biosciences and related subjects. I support students to: produce excellent personal statements with minimal stress; shape their academic identities and choose courses; prep for confident interviews and complete entrance exams.
* Essays and projects. I have extensive experience in helping students plan, produce and edit essays, literature reviews and research projects. This includes niche, specialist work that most other tutors won't engage with and draws on my skills as a porfessional writer with a background in science.
In addition, I have expertise in history and philosophy of science, especially the early modern period.
Writing academically is one of my core skills, and I am able to help students from almost any subject improve their writing pieces.
