I am a reliable, approachable, and experienced tutor. I have received feedback from colleagues about my useful and constructive feedback and my ability to help students understand a range of sociological concepts and topics. *NEW TO SPIRES*
I have held several tutoring roles at the University of Edinburgh from 2014 to 2022. Through these, I have tutored over 250 students. My roles have included dissertation support, providing feedback on assignments, offering research design advice and support, directing students towards useful literature, offering feedback on presentations, and helping to build critical analysis skills.
My expertise is in human geography, with a significant crossover into sociological theories and literature. I have also been a private tutor, helping two students to reach their aim of receiving a 2:1 or above in their final degree grade.
Alongside my using my extensive knowledge of human geography and sociology, I can also support students with a range of academic work including (but not limited to):
- essay writing
- presentation skills and preparation
- dissertation feedback and guidance
- critical thinking skills
- research design
- conducting qualitative research (interviews, focus groups, ethnographic research)
- using literature to build an argument
- understanding and applying theory
- proof reading and editing
Sociological themes:
Gender
Race
Everyday life
Historical impacts
Cultural norms
Concept of home
Intergenerational concepts
Economic & political themes
I can offer undergraduate students with support on their topic or assignment(s) of choice - from 1st year to final year.
I have received significant praise for my engaging, personable, and approachable style in teaching and facilitating discussions within my experiences as a University of Edinburgh academic tutor and fieldwork demonstrator. Based on consistently positive feedback from students and colleagues, these roles demonstrate my ability to motivate and engage participants in learning about innovative ideas or approaches. For example, within my role as a fieldwork demonstrator on annual field trips to the Western Isles I provided a short training session on ‘how to interview’ – a session that was well received by staff and students and was praised for its accessibility and informative nature.
